I can't get the new blogger to work. I post and nothing comes up. Ugh.

Walk This Way

As I recall, my first blog here was a line from "City of New Orleans." I had thought to try the line Hello, hello, it's good to be back... on the new blog, but Gary Glitter references don't seem appropriate right now, or ever. Instead, just consider this my invitation to you to see the new digs. Come On, Get Lively will remain here for archiving purposes.

See you there.

Moving sale, everything must go!

I'm proud to announce I have purchased webspace for my new website, to debut December 23. I thank the wonder Sarah Churchman for her design talents...it looks great and I can't think of a better way to resume my online life with a new look and a new outlook.

My new hosting program comes with blogging software, so I'll be getting Lively elsewhere very soon. The site here will remain for archiving purposes, of course, but when the new site is up I hope those of you who bookmarked me will move with me.

Watch this space.

Coming soon...

Stay tuned for a whole new look and feel to this blog, to coincide with the all-new KathrynLively.com, to be launched soon. Edits to the new edition of Little Flowers are done, and I'm off to Roanoke this weekend for Valley Bookfest. Then to submit a short for Mundania's new line of short fiction, then to resume work on Collared. I've decided to skip NaNoWriMo this year due to various circumstances. Collared is going to be a bit more involved than that, it might stretch to January if I'm lucky.

This is not goodbye...

Three years is, I think, a pretty good run for posting regular nonsense and Gedlust and pictures of Dhani Harrison. You'll notice the absurdity is few and far between now. Much has changed on this side of the keyboard - a new job, a baby who isn't quite a baby anymore, and general ennui. The continuous piling on my plate has caused a number of side projects to fall to the wayside, namely the lively blog. I've been stuck on page one of Collared for quite some time, and it seems every time I pick up the pen Little G has something new to say or show. Every time I sit here to blog, I realize I have a speech to write for an upcoming book festival. Too many hands on my time, as the Professor once wrote.

This is not goodbye, but merely a long vacation. I'll still post links to new parishioners, when I remember to add them (LOL). I do have a relaunch of the homepage, which is due at the end of the month, so you know there will be some merry-making to be had then. Otherwise, I need to take a nap. I haven't slept since October 22, 2004, and I imagine the next seventeen, or seventy, years won't be a restful.

Oh, and buy my books.

Blogging will be light for the next few weeks while I get acquainted with a new job starting the 12th (more later), and edits to Little Flowers, and Labor Day with Little G all day, and wringing my hands over Katrina. I'll do what I can to aid relief efforts - I have clothing and O-neg blood. Money, not so much, but who does when gas is the same price per gallon as a 6-inch Jared special? Maybe even more than that.

I'd bike to work, I can, but I have to take Little G to the sitter and she's not quite ready for the bike seat. Malc is looking into it on his end; he's gone farther on this Trek, so it won't be so much an issue for him. Only issue is the possibility of getting run down by an SUV on the way to the WaWa that has gas for $2.99 cheap (!).

I was telling Little G how this reminded me of when I was little, when Jimmy Carter was president and we had to sit roasting in the back of a white Ford Pinto waiting to get gas. She didn't seem so interested, so I turned up the Dave Brubeck which she seemed to prefer.

Steven Wright had a joke once about how he could look at a baby and know what he/she was going to be. I have a feeling Little G is going to involved in some kind of dominatrix field. She likes to hit things, my nose being one. Plus, I swear while she was toddling around she said "Mama" for the first time. I tried to get her to say it again. All I got was "Dada."

Who is going to call when she needs money?

Guh?

Big spike in visitors this weekend. I thought at first everybody else was wondering about that Alex Lifeson/40 Year-Old-Virgin soon-to-be urban legend, but all were referrals from Amy Welborn's blog. Nice. Buy my book.

Anyway, changes are coming soon, which might or might not allow for more blogging time. I'm taking a new job in two weeks, shucking the shackles of corporate life for something more my speed. Details later.

So it begins again...

Got the edits for the second coming of Little Flowers. I'll be watching this one very closely, now that I have the opportunity to do what should have been done years ago. I hope to have a better marketing plan for this story rather than the advice of the book's original publisher, which was to do nothing because an author who hawks her own work looks unprofessional. Guess what, an author who doesn't hawk her own work sells no books, as I later learned.

I'll do my damndest to make it up to the book, despite the aftermath of recent public appearances. If you don't shoot, you have missed.

2005/08/24

Yay!

This should give me time to watch them all again and understand what's going on before season 2.

It's a Festivus Miracle!

Flash is alive. He emerged from the woods yesterday. Not too injured, but dehydrated. He's at the animal hospital now and the prognosis looks good.

Look for the whole story in the next Andy Farmer book.

2005/08/22

Damn Good Dawg

I learned this weekend my father's dog is gone. Not confirmed dead, but just gone. My parents recently moved to a duplex, and Flash was outside doing this thing when their neighbor accidentally clipped the dog backing out of his driveway. Nobody knew the extent of Flash's injuries because he took off into the woods surrounding the complex and hasn't been seen since. Dad wasn't able to find him; it's assumed that he died or that some kind of animal carted him off - it possible, they are pretty remote.

It's upsetting to hear Flash had to go like that. My parents got him at a time when my dad was suffering emotionally and mentally. Flash helped to lift his spirits. If you have read Pithed, the story of how Andy Farmer winds up with the doxie he calls Steely Dan mirrors how Flash came to the family. Flash also inspired Ringo, Jason's beagle in Murder Most Trivial. In fact I had just started writing the sequel to Pithed, where Steely Dan does a particular dog act at St. Max's, when I heard the news. My heart's almost not in it to keep writing, and I know Dad's taking it badly, but I feel something positive can come from this.

Get it while you can

Bob Stanton and I have asked for reversal of rights on Dangerous Words. When we published the ebook with Echelon Press, we signed an agreement stipulating that we would not seek print publication for two years. The two years are up, and we are going to persue that, but not before the book gets an overhaul. So, if you still want to read it for a buck, now is the time. Get it before Echelon removes it from their catalog. Best buck you'll ever spend outside a jumbo Kit-Kat bar at Rite-Aid.

I have no intention of seeing The 40-Year-Old Virgin, but I can't shake the trailer from my head. Where he's getting his shag carpet waxed off, he screams something that I swear sounds like "Alex Lifeson"! Malc hears it, too, but other people say he is reall screaming, "Kelly Clarkson"!

Why scream either when getting waxed? Is anybody going to know who Kelly Clarkson is five years down the road when this flick is running 20 times a day on TNT? Who is Kelly Clarkson, anyway?

And what about Lerxst? When I met him and Ged, I didn't get the impression that he was particularly hairy. Usually when I scream out Big Al's name it's because...oh, never mind. At any rate, it gives me an excuse to post the pic again. I need to meet them again when I'm not pregnant.

I'm almost tempted to wait for the DVD so I can rewind it and run it in slow motion, discerning the movement of the actor's mouth as he screams. Are his teeth together to form the F in Lifeson, or the hard RK sound of Clarkson? And why can't I think of anything more constructive to do with my time?

Our prices are insane

So are the covers. I ordered a number of copies of Murder Most Trivial from CafePress.com to take with me on these booksignings. They arrived in fairly good condition, but the covers are a bit askew. It appears the covers printed at a slant on some copies, leaving white space which would normally be cut off in the binding process. Doesn't lend a very professional look to the book.

I wouldn't feel right charging the full ten dollars for these books, so I plan to mark them down to five at the book fairs. If you would like a signed, irregular copy of MMT for $6.84 (cost of book plus media mail shipping), drop a line in the comment box and I'll get back to you.

You can still, of course, read it online for free:

Murder...is that the final answer? Norfolk high school senior Jason Greevey seems to think so. When winning contestants from a local restaurant's trivia contest begin turning up dead, runner-up Jason worries that he will be the next weakest link! His concerns, however, fall on deaf ears and nearly cause a family feud with widowed father Dan, who has problems of his own. For one, an obsessive former girlfriend is making life
difficult for Dan and his current ladyfriend. Then there are those curious magazines Dan has been finding in his son's bedroom...

Determined to beat the clock and find the killer first, Jason recruits his friends for a citywide chase, going so far as to interview potential witnesses and crash a victim's shivah. His actions hardly meet the approval of his father, not to mention local authorities, but Jason is intent on solving the trivia contest murders, and therefore preserve the future he has yet to reveal to family and friends.

Set in Norfolk, the author has created a pleasant, descriptive background with a definite modern flavor. -- eBook Reviews Weekly

MURDER MOST TRIVIAL is a good read. -- All About Murder

From the opening lines, Murder Most Trivial carries the reader on a fast paced ride from teenaged angst to parental concern, a little romance and a whole lot of cozenage in this easily read, fast paced work. -- Molly

Genuine accident...or elaborate PR stunt? There's a rash of accidental Harry Potter sales going around. I remember working at B&N, how we were expressly forbidden to sell a bestseller before its release date, else subject the store to a fine. Serious fines, too, in the thousands of dollars. I don't completely understand the reasoning behind it, but right now I'm trying to figure out how to work this to my advantage.

So if I hurry up and finish Collared, the sequel to Pithed and accidentally sell it before it's contracted, will I sell a million copies? What of the people who have bought the new Harry Potter? How the publisher must be itching to track them down. I can just see somebody atop a bank building with a book and bullhorn, threatening to read aloud while the National Guard covers the sidewalks.

Buy my books. I don't care if it's before their time. Please.

Women Accused of Scamming Aspiring Writers from the AP. I know of the publishing company named in this article, SFWA's Writer Beware site, among other alert sites, keeps up to date on dubious pubs and agencies. Nothing ticks me off more than a company that takes advantage of an aspiring writer. I've been there myself, and now I'm fortunate to have the backing of a good publisher like Mundania. I can only hope that I can sell enough of Pithed to keep that relationship going when I'm ready to send them Collared. I've ordered copies for Read Martinsville, and any money I make from there will likely be funneled back to Mundania to purchase copies for future events. Such is the life of a small press author.

Noticed some sites had registered twice, you need only register one with Ringsurf, and make sure the code is in your template. No code, no admission. I don't know if some people assume I go in there and add it for you, I can't do that. You have to do it.

Also, now that the queue is clear, there's a new policy for joining the St. Blog's ring: A) Must be a blog, no general Catholic sites; B) must be Catholic, Eastern is accepted; C) Must have code up within five days. After five days, I'll email the code again. If it still isn't up, you're gone. THEN you can reapply.

Warm Fuzzies

Author Kathryn Lively quickly established a direct connection with her main character. I read the confession, knew who and how, didn’t I? I was pulled right in to Andy Farmer's moral and ethical dilemma of loyalties and friendship, trapped in his confusion with each rise, dip, twist, and turn of this well crafted, fast moving, roller coaster adventure, expertly jolted from my conclusions and left looking for new answers. And, all the while, I was thoroughly entertained. “Pithed” is a page turner. Andy is a new favorite. And, Kathryn Lively is a new author to watch.

“Romantic Inns & Writers Tour”

A Unique Event that Celebrates National Historic Inn and B&B Day

St. Augustine, Fl (JUNE 14, 2005) The St. Augustine Historic Inns and the First Coast Romance Writers Association are hosting a Sunday afternoon tour of Inns and published romance writers on October 2, 2005 from 2:00pm – 5:00pm. At the same time, prominent romance writers will be at each inn meeting fans and signing their most recently published novels.

Kathryn Lively, author of SAINTS PERSERVE US: an Ash Lake Mystery, 2003 Royal Palm Award Winner, Best Published Mystery

They embody the romance and history of St. Augustine, offering the best in architectural preservation, unique character, tradition and hospitality for which America’s oldest city is known. Within walking distance to each other, they are surrounded by charming boutiques, international restaurants, historic landmarks, the Atlantic Ocean, legends and ghosts that go back to the founding of St. Augustine in 1565. This year, the Inn Association celebrates its 20th Anniversary.

My dilemma is this...

The scheduling angels, in their infinite wisdom, have scheduled the Romantic Times 2006 convention and BookExpo America 2006 on the same bloody weekend! I had planned to attend both with my publishers to maybe sell a book to somebody who isn't a relative, and unfortunately these events are not close enough to allow me to do both. So I must choose, the lady or the tiger. Paper or plastic. Baked or fried. Geddy or Paulie. Ugh.

So let's weigh out some pros and cons. Maybe you can help me decide:

RT: in Daytona Beach - close to my parents so I have room and board free
BEA: in DC - close to me, and I have family there as well

RT: attended mainly by readers who love to buy books
BEA: attended mainly by booksellers who will determine what books end up on their shelves

RT: features workshops for authors, insight on writing and marketing
BEA: same

RT: lots of hunky cover models wandering around the place
BEA: maybe I'll get to see Dave Barry again like I did in Chicago

RT: would have opportunity to sell and sign books
BEA: would have opportunity to sign books, but no selling - the books would go to the booksellers as samples

RT: caters to all genres of fiction, so my mysteries would work there
BEA: same

I won't factor cost, because both events are worth their price, though BEA for me was cheap because I got in through another company. I paid $75 just to wander around for three days. RT will cost a few hundred.

Thoughts?

I greet the newcomers who found this blog on searches for "sleep deprivation" and "Patricia Kennealy's home address." Sorry to say that I don't know where Patricia Kennealy lives, and I don't think she knows where Jim Morrison is now, assuming he's not six feet under in France, as normal people assume he is.

Just browsing through the archives where I found the posts that led people to this blog, I realized something. I used to write so much here. I used to write lengthy, thought-provoking entries...of course, not all of them made sense. To think of it, I doubt any post makes sense here. This has mainly been a repository for every weird little thought I wanted to expel from memory so I could preserve my mind for more important things, like remembering to pay rent.

Anyway, I have concluded that the sudden downward spiral coincided with the baby, though I don't hold her responsible. It could be my thoughts of the baby have pushed aside the myriad of useless trivia I had kept stored for years. Perhaps, too, I seldom post out of fear that one day Genny will read all of this and think that her mother is strange. Of course, I imagine she won't need to read this blog to figure that out.

The point is, I will endeavor to make more time to post more substantially in the future, when I'm not watching the baby, or writing a book, or trying to get people to buy the books I have out.

To quote Frank Barone...Holy crap!

Midwest Book Review reviewed Pithed, and what a review!

School mysteries are usually such fun because of the potential for a character driven plot, and Kathryn Lively plays it to the max. Poor Andy Farmer finds himself as one of the prime suspects in the murder of a vile man who had the power and loved to destroy careers. His fellow teachers all have their coping mechanisms for dealing with such machinations, but Andy's best friend Chuck has the most to hide and believes he committed the murder in a moment of loyalty to Andy. As if Andy didn't have enough to feel guilty about! Enough said...this is a cozy mystery written by a woman with wisdom far beyond her years. She understands the desperation of baby boomers nearing retirement and spins a darn good yard around that idea. Kathryn Lively is definitely an up and comer, and PITHED is a great little mystery!

I'm feeling a bit taller today, don't know about you.

Pray For Us Sinners

Pray For Us Sinners: An Ash Lake Mystery by Kathryn Lively

Now available in eBook and paperback! Order by clicking on the above link.

Soap star Allayne Witt was Ash Lake, Florida's "local girl made good." Her untimely death of cancer touched all, especially childhood friends Ronnie Lord and Gina Hayes.

Allayne's brash stage mother, however, has ideas of her own. Not only is Lorraine Witz convinced that her daughter was murdered, she believes Ronnie is the perfect person to solve the crime! With very little evidence to go on, and professional and personal problems with Sheriff Lew Caperton causing her frustration, Ronnie is reluctant to be of service, yet can do little to resist the pull of "Hurricane Lorraine." Preparing to meet the Pope at her great, great aunt Lorena's canonization ceremony must wait in this sequel to the award-winning Saints Preserve Us.

PRAY FOR US SINNERS is a witty, breezy mystery with an appealing heroine/detective, a well-drawn supporting cast, and a surprise ending. Now, what more could you possibly want? - William J. Calabrese, author of BORDERLAND and TO CAPTURE AN EAGLE

[PRAY FOR US SINNERS] is an intriguing page-turner, full of plot twists and quirky characters, set in steamy Northeast Florida. I recommend you buy two copies: one for you, and one for your favorite priest! - Lydia Hawke, author of FIRETRAIL and PERFECT DISGUISE

PRAY FOR US SINNERS is the perfect blend and balance of mystery, humor and history. Unforgettable characters and surprising twists up until the very end make this a must read mystery. - Karen Rinehart, Newspaper columnist and author of INVISIBLE UNDERWEAR, BUS STOP MOMMIES and OTHER THINGS TRUE TO LIFE

I'm going to be on Definitely Dana Internet Radio, June 1 at 3PM EST, talking about Pithed! I tape the show today. My column in Single For Now will focus on Pray. So much to do.

Thoughts on a rainy evening

If you lose a finger, don't you want to try to have reattached?

While I don't doubt Karol is in Heaven, I think we should the requisite five years. I have enough non-Catholic friends who question the sainthood process as it is, and I imagine this might lead to a slew of false alarms for the committee to handle. Besides, it's akin to cutting in line, I think, and I think Papa would be willing to wait his turn.

Greek festival was this weekend. Stuffed like a kalamata.

Did an interview for the Times-Union about Pithed. Here's hoping it gets published.

...and you read stuff like this and want to pray more for yourself, because it's things like this that might cause you to rethink Catholic teaching on birth control, because some people just shouldn't be having children. What an inexcusable act.

Longer post later

In Jax for the weekend for Mom's retirement party. Will blog on that later since it's worth blogging. In the meantime I'm going to eat everything they don't have in VA.

So Geneva's boyfriend has his own website now. Not too shabby, but the picture on front makes him look like a CNN anchor or something. If you're in the mood for a laugh, click on the "Download Illegal MP3s" link.

It finally hit me today...

as I was calling the sitter to say I would be late. I called myself "Geneva's Mom." It hit me: I'm somebody's mom. And it only took six months for it to sink in.

Breathe...breathe in the air. Don't be afraid to care.

It took all of my strength not to stand on my chair in my cubicle at work the second I overheard a new co-worker griping about the coverage of Papa's passing. I heard "leader" and "most corrupt organization" and I so wanted to stand up and start screaming. Of course, who am I to cast stones? We are not without problems, but this habit of people making blanket statements about the Church doesn't sit well. Other organizations do far worse things.

Quickly the subject changed to which poor unfortunate, tone-deaf soul was ousted from American Idol, Bachelor Bob, Who Wants to Be Exploited?, etc. Welcome to my life. When I wasn't actually working I spent my downtime staring at Genny's picture, praying for the state to find a way to pay teachers what they are really worth, that my time might be better spent teaching her to be a more charitable Christian than her mother.

There's a discussion on a board I frequent about possible names the next pontiff will choose. Personally I hope he doesn't pick John Paul III. Not that it wouldn't be a fond tribute, but I think some time should pass before the name is taken again. Perhaps another Pope John or Pope Paul, or maybe something unique.

Getting back to normal, I am trying to devote myself more to Genny's television viewing habits. I might have mentioned once that she's rather sweet on The Wiggles, who are reported to be the wealthiest entertainers in Australia. They're raking in more than AC/DC, to whom Genny is also partial, though I think Neil Peart is still her first love.

And Cookie Monster is eating veggies now. I don't get it. When I was five years old I watched this cat put away an entire case of Vienna Fingers without blinking (of course, Cookie Monster can't blink, he doesn't have eyelids). Crumbs spewing, deep-throated moans of approval...and not once in my youth was I ever encouraged to binge snack like that. It took a bad relationship in college to ignite that habit. Cookie Monster is faultless.

Finding joy in small things

It's a sad time still, yes, and at our house it's been amplified by the news of the death of Malc's major professor from UGA. Coupled with some recent online ugliness, I can safely say I just haven't found the heart to "Get Lively."

So you might find it odd to know that it had to take something like breakfast cereal to help lift the mood around here. Picture, if you will, a look of bright-eyed joy on the face of a nearly middle-aged couple upon turning a corner and discovering a bold pyramid of blue cereal boxes, harkening back to younger, more carefree days. Quisp. Quisp is back. It's at the beach, at our store, grinning wide through the image of a bulb-headed pink alien. We had to move the baby to fill our cart.

It may sound silly to think that one's mood can be lightened by something like this, but given recent events I find it's okay to find joy in small things, especially things connected to a pleasant memory. I think of Quisp, and I'm seven years old again, watching the Archies with a big bowl of cereal, and unaware that there's a world full of ugliness waiting for you when you're first able to comprehend it. I'd like to be that young again, if only for a day. I look at Genny and hope she stays that young forever.

Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so wonderful.
Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so good.
No one could be, so gentle and so lovable.
Oh, my pa-pa, he always understood.
Gone are the days when he could take me on his knee
and with a smile he'd change my tears to laughter.
Oh, my pa-pa, so funny, so adorable,
always the clown so funny in his way.
Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so wonderful.
Deep in my heart I miss him so today.

Special thanks to Pat Sweeney for compiling this list of blogs with information/commentary on Terri Schiavo. I'll put it up top too for easy access.

Two from Oblique House

By way of Summa Mamas:

Ten things that I’ve done that I think my readers haven’t done...

1. I met the Captain of the USS Eisenhower
2. I sat on the lap of an Oscar nominee (the late Vincent Gardenia, who was the brother of my mother's cousin's husband. I was three at the time).
3. I had a novel published before I turned 30.
4. I judged the Peabody Awards as a student at UGA.
5. I performed as Janet for the Jax Regency Rocky Horror cast for a few weeks in college.
6. I met two-thirds of Rush.
7. I went to see Korn, Snoop Dogg, and Linkin Park in concert when I was eight months pregnant.
8. I went to my grandmother's 100th birthday party.
9. I met Rudy from the first Survivor.
10. I waited four hours to get Anne Rice's autograph.

There's a picture of me with Anne, too, somewhere.

List the first five movie quotes you can think of. They must be from different movies.

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here. This is the War Room. - Dr. Strangelove

Bring out the gimp. - Pulp Fiction

What does God need with a spaceship? - Star Trek V

Is this Clarice? Hello, Clarice. - Hannibal

Put that thing back where it came from or so help me... - Monsters, Inc.

Actually, he doesn't, but if he should happen to one day I hope he'll call. For now I have to be happy with watching "O Baterista" over and over and over and over because it's the only thing that keeps her quiet. To think I wasted nine months telling her in utero that Geddy is the cute one.

Geneva's taken to the spoon quite well, I'm surprised that I haven't yet had to clean rice cereal off the walls. It's almost too perfect the way the cereal stays in her mouth. I'm wondering when the other bootie will fall...and maybe manifest itself into some unpleasant diaper surprise.

Anyway, reading Tim Bete's new book is rather timely for me. I think now, that I have plucked two binkies and a package of crackers from my coat pocket while looking for change, I can relate to being a parent now. It's finally sinking in, but now that we are gradually spoon-feeding it's made me realize that time is passing. Soon she'll be crawling...away from me.

And while I've been feeding Geneva I've been looking over some of these blogs for Terri Schiavo and I find myself thinking about food. When Geneva is hungry she lets me know it, she cries and cries, and she can sense when it's coming, too. To hear her cry breaks my heart, and at this time I'm not producing as much milk as I did when she was born. It saddens me that there will come a time where I can't nurse anymore, that I won't be able to provide Geneva in that respect.

And I wonder how anybody could stand to pull a feeding tube from this woman and let her go in such a terrible way. Starvation is not pleasant. I can't stand to hear Geneva cry for two seconds when she's hungry, how could anyone stand to deny Terri?

Despite having not seen any of the nominated films, we watched the awards anyway. Best parts: Jamie Foxx's speech and Clint introducing his mum. Gotta love a guy who will bring his 96-year-old mother to the Oscars. But, Clint, couldn't you have sprung a front-row seat for her? :-)

Interesting, too, that the Academy included Rodney Dangerfield in the annual death march but for years denied his application to join the Academy.

And what was the deal with having some of the winners give their speeches in the audience, like they weren't good enough to step up on stage? It's like Jeremy Irons was on his way to the men's room and asked to give out an award on the way out. Yeesh.

Salma Hayek's on stage talking forever. Malc asks, "Is she hosting now? What happened to Chris Rock? Did we run out of Lord of the Rings films? Who are these people? Is it over?"

Yes, it's over. Marty got the shaft again. Go to bed.

Jack Osbourne gets hit in the family jewels. Not that I care, I was just looking for an excuse to use that headline. Who carries that much stuff around in a briefcase, anyway? Why not just paint a target on your American Tourister?

The pope's operation went well, I hear. I hope his recovery is quick.

And another update on the Blessed Miguel Pro children's book: I'm told the illustrator is working on it. I don't know if this is a new illustrator or the one who was hospitalized a while back, causing the initial production delay. I'm told, also, that a tentative April date is scheduled for the Blessed Miguel radio program I co-scripted (I think WEWN is broadcasting these), so I'm guessing the book comes out at the same time since it's been that way for their other books. I hope it comes out before Genny's too old to think coloring books are lame. :-)

Blogs for Terri

A letter from Beth Cleaver:

I am writing to invite you to become part of an organized effort among over 100 bloggers to help bring a just resolution to the plight of Terri Schiavo. Terri Schiavo is a disabled woman who has been denied appropriate medical treatment and whose life has been threatened for the past fifteen years. Right now there is a massive effort in the Blogosphere to first save her life and then restore her rights to appropriate medical treatment. You can help in this effort. Here's how:

1. Educate yourself on her situation. A good comprehensive website to start with is her family's official website at www.terrisfight.org. You can find the latest breaking news on her case at www.blogsforterri.com. In addition, there are many other linked websites and blogs you can visit, and you can find your own sources with the help of your favorite search engine.

2. Get the word out. Email your family and friends, your local radio stations, newspapers, and anyone else you can think of.

3. Join the effort at http://www.blogsforterri.com/archives/2005/02/where_do_i_begi.php.
Since you have a blog, consider joining the blogburst and post about Terri on a daily basis. Contact the key people in Florida provided here at http://www.blogsforterri.com/archives/2005/02/people_to_conta_1.php.
You also have an opportunity to participate in a pledge drive to raise funds to place a full page ad in the St. Petersburg Times, Terri Schiavo's local paper. Go to http://www.blogsforterri.com/archives/2005/02/blogsforterri_a_1.php for more information. No doubt, there are other ways to get involved in the works. Check back at www.blogsforterri.org often for updates.

I know we can't all do everything, but if we all do what we can, we can make a difference. Please join our efforts to help save Terri Schiavo's life and provide her with the medical treatment she has been so long denied. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Beth Cleaver

Will the person(s) responsible for reporting me to Ringsurf please stop? The ring has not been abandoned. I have a full-time job and a four-month-old child, and five editing assignments due in March. Like Geddy sings, I do the best that I can.

I certainly hope whomever contacted Ringsurf at least had good cause. There are still a number of blogs in the queue without the code.

In the process of spring cleaning the blogroll. It's overgrown, not necessarily like weeds in a yard, because there are no weeds in the bunch. Noticed a few blogs were stagnant, others gone, so I'm starting anew. It will take some time but I'll be working on it in the midst of doing other important things, like that upcoming pictorial salute to Max Gail. Bet you can't wait for that, eh?

Anyway, if you were on the roll and now are not, it's nothing personal. Just drop me a line in the comments box and let me know you're still blogging and I'll put you back up.

Is there a patron for hot-headed, sleep-deprived mommies?

There's a reason I don't debate apologetics, I blow my stack. I take the easy way out. Instead of counting to ten and trying to think of a plausible and polite rebuttal to a challenge, I'm more apt to take the Jeanine Garafolo approach as seen in Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion when she tells Camryn Manheim to "f--- off."

I'm being challenged in real life, and my tongue is tied. I don't want to convert anybody, I just want to be able to hold my own without looking the fool, and it's not working. I don't being accused of defending a religion as opposed to defending my faith, which is where my current situation seems to be going. Please pray for me. Better yet, help.

Damn you, Baldrick!

Well, I'm hearing now that the Blackadder report is baldrick-dash. Apparently it's just a rumor that The Sun ran with, there isn't a fifth series in the works. So I suppose we'll have to be content with the DVDs and that bizzare Little Britain show on BBCA.

Sgt. Blackadder's Lonely Cunning Plan

New Blackadder series to be set in the swinging Sixties. I can't wait, I've been in withdrawl for years, having to be satisfied with what BBC America is showing. I have to wonder, though, if Hugh Laurie will put in overtime since he's doing House. Can't see leaving George behind.

Criminal Court Part Two is now in session

Got the first season of Night Court on DVD with my Best Buy gift card today. Why is it nobody will let you just buy something at a store anymore? Clerks need to know my phone number, try to sell me rewards cards and subscriptions to magazines. I'm on my lunch break, I need to get back. Just sell me the damn DVD and I'm gone. Didn't help that the poor girl mumbled her entire dialogue. Bleh. Maybe I'll stick to Amazon.com from now on.

You can, too, with the links to your right (hint, hint).

Depressing note, I didn't get into the First Coast Writers Festival, but I'm encouraged to submit a presentation for next year. That's what they said last year, too.

Got an e-mail from author Ann Crispin. If you're a sci-fi fan, you'll have heard of her; I know she's written a few Star Trek novels, as well as novels based on others shows (V, I think). Anyway, just Google her for the bibliography. Ann is spearheading the campaign to investigate Publish America and their alleged dubious practices. If you or anyone you know has dealt with PA, contact me and I'll forward you Ann's letter.

I've been fortunate never to have dealt with PA myself, but I can tell a similar story with the publisher who put out Little Flowers in 2001. When I was informed they were going out of business, I barely was able to order a box of books just to keep. I have one original copy left, the rest were sold or given away. I bought that box at the end of 2003; I have yet to receive royalties on the box I purchased. It's not worth suing for, either. Besides, I don't know what happened to them. That's why the PA stories burn me up. Nobody should be taken advantage of like some of us have been in the past.

The Good, The Bad, The Unpublished

It is February. You will note I had announced many moons ago that my coloring book on Blessed Miguel was due in November, last November. Still no book. The latest word from Catholic World Mission is that the artist has had to undergo a number of surgeries, so the project is still in the works. In the meantime, the radio shio on Blessed Miguel that I wrote is near completion, but I still don't have an air date.

Mark your calendars, on October 23rd I'll be in Waynesboro, Virginia for the second annual Book 'Em event. They had such a good turnout last year they are expanding it to two days. I'd be there on the 22nd, but that is Genny's first birthday. Also, I'm trying to get into the Amelia Island Book Festival in early October and the First Coast Writers Festival in May. Fingers crossed.

Malc on...

Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper: "I refuse to drink anything that would take me twenty minutes to order in a restaurant."

Fossil Fuel, the new Ben and Jerry flavor with little fudge dinosaurs: "So what are the creationists eating?"

The Wiggles, to whom Genny has taken a liking: "No way in hell am I watching that."

In case you're keeping track...

SpongeBob is not gay. Neither are the Teletubbies, the Smurfs, or the Snorks. Jury's still out on Gargamel, though. Single guy, wears a dress, owns a cat. Hmmmm...

Worst. Novel. Ever?

At least I've never written anything this bad, unintentionally.

A group from the SFWA decided to own PublishAmerica, a POD "traditional publisher" that claims high standards, but is rumored to accept anything and everything. Atlanta Nights is the story of how this group wrote a POS for the POD to prove the rumors right. What do you know, it worked!

One side note by me: not everything pubbed by PA is crap. Former CWA member Michael Manno put out an excellent mystery called The Deadly Habit, but unfortunately it is not in print anymore because Michael sought to void his contract with PA because he wasn't satisfied with them. He's one of the lucky ones, but on the other side of the coin I don't believe he's been able to find another publisher for the book, which is a shame because it's very good.

Probably for the first time in many years, I have not seen any of the five nominated films for Best Picture. Used to be I'd see each one before the ceremony, but I've been waning. Last year I think I had only seen RotK, which was just as well since it won everything. Are there no LotR sequels eligible this year? No? Rats.

Was surprised to see Farenheit 911 was absent, though it got some Razzie noms. Come to think of it, I don't think I've seen any of those films, either.

And don't be discouraged that The Passion got so few nods. I heard Mel wasn't planning to campaign it, and noms tend to go to people who do. Anyway, I've come to believe that the Oscars are really just a ploy to award people this year who should have won in the past. So look for Scorcese, Annette Bening, and Morgan Freeman to receive "life achievement" gold.

But you know I'm still going to watch it.

Your W00T Moment of the Day

I think that's the highest ranking I've received on Amazon.com yet. Thanks, everybody!

Remember, Pithed makes a great Valentine's Day gift for you loved one.

And, coming soon, the proposed new cover for Pray For Us Sinners:

I took the picture of the Mary statue and did the color tinting. The original cover I had disappeared in transit to the new laptop, but I agree with Chrissie Poe that this cover is much sleeker. Can't wait to see it in print this summer.

People are suggesting it might be time for Genny to try cereal now, though she's only 13 weeks. She's holding her head up a bit, not quite in complete control of it, but it seems she is hungrier in the nighttime. I've had to feed her more often in the past two weeks; it's a hell of a growth spurt. I don't know if I can keep up with the demand.

In the meantime, I have a review for Single For Now magazine to do, and an article for Mystery Readers Journal I want to submit for the Spring ish. Ah, multitasking.

I used to carry such a tiny little purse, when I bothered to carry one at all...this morning I lugged three bags to the car, and the car seat. You'd have thought I was leaving my husband. I was going to work.

She made it through the first round of shots better than I did. Nothing tears your heart out more than watching your baby get stuck with a needle. :-( Good news is that she didn't get a fever or need any medicine to get through the rest of the day. Her mother, on the other hand...

And to cap off this week of headaches, I learned today I didn't get a job I really wanted. Assistant director of communications - a job of writing, editing, and Web development. I was perfect for it, exceeded the qualifications and experience, and I didn't even get an interview. I think that's what hurt the most. If I don't get a job, I don't get a job, but at least give me the chance to interview before you decide to go with somebody else. Makes me wonder if they already had somebody in mind and had to post the position for legal reasons, which I think is stupid. It's like waving a sign for free beer at a football game and turning away the first person in line. I like the job I have now, am grateful to have a job, but this isn't what I want to do forever.

Only good things about today, the baby is sleeping peacefully and Rush in Rio is on VH1 Classic (Bytor!). Ooh, an ad for I Love the 90s Part Deux. That should tide me over until the next Real Gilligan's Island.
